Depiction of the fatal car accident involving Kiana Kaylyn Thurston-Kaneshiro

In Tooele, Utah, a 19-year-old Utah woman has been charged with serious criminal offenses following a fatal car crash that occurred last year. The driver, Kiana Kaylyn Thurston-Kaneshiro of Bountiful, faces one count of second-degree felony for operating a vehicle negligently resulting in death, and three counts of third-degree felony for causing serious injury by negligent operation.

The incident took place on April 12, 2023, on Interstate 80 near Delle. According to the Utah Highway Patrol, Thurston-Kaneshiro's vehicle, carrying five young adults aged 18 to 20, veered off after hitting a rumble strip. The car swerved sharply, overcorrected, and subsequently rolled down the median's embankment. Four passengers, who were not wearing seat belts, were ejected from the vehicle.

One of the ejected passengers, 19-year-old Khaiyla Comer, sustained critical injuries and succumbed six days later. Investigations revealed that Thurston-Kaneshiro was driving over 100 mph and lost control of her vehicle. Further examination showed she had crossed into the opposite lane at a high speed, triggering the accident after overcorrecting from a drift caused by running over the rumble strips.

Additionally, Thurston-Kaneshiro tested positive for THC, confirming that she had used marijuana during the trip, which was substantiated by her own admission to consuming the substance.
